People out to make a quick buck so often prey upon the sick, the elderly, widows, divorcees, and a few people who are so "open-minded" or gullible that their brains are nearly falling out.

There are many fine products that foster one's health such as antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and various herbs. There are a couple references to alternative medicine on my website that you can check out. It is wise to consult with your healthcare provider about over-the-counter medications and supplements and their compatibility with any/all prescription medications you are taking, and considering your personal health history. Your doctor and your pharmacist should be aware of both your prescription and non-prescription treatments, allergies and health history for your safety.

However, you as a consumer should be your first advocate. If you are advised to take something, ask about the side effects, and ask for and read the package insert. In addition, you can research whatever it is on the internet along with the word "warning" or "beware" or "scam" or "caution." See what pops up. You should try to distinguish between "subjective" comments and "objective" data as you read.

In this day and age, there is a lot of data that is hidden, suppressed, and even "thrown out" in order to get new drugs approved and put on the market. A pharmaceutical firm needs about 2 years marketing to recoup development costs for a new drug. Additionally, it has been said that about 66% of a drug company's profits go into advertising!

But legal prescription drugs are not the only problem. Non-prescription drugs, treatments and guidebooks are also marketed; aimed at the infirm and even the healthy.

I recently (Mar, 2008) heard a radio commercial recommending "Tylenol" to help you adjust to the end of "Daylight Saving." I broke out in laughter, disgust and disbelief. Imagine that-- pushing Tylenol (TM) on people to help them get over losing an hour's sleep once a year! Now what drug will be pushed to help us when we "have to" sleep an extra hour in the autumn when Daylight Saving is resumed? A sleeping pill to help us stay asleep the extra hour? Or will we need to be supercharged with some caffeine-laden pill to keep us awake the rest of the week? Ghaaaaaaaaaaad!!!

Don't be Duped!

There is a lot of junk on the web to help people with all kinds of diseases. I recently found one such scam ad when at a free petition website which had a Lyme disease survey I had participated in. To the right were targeted sponsor ads that the petition website automatically downloads, related to the subject of the petiton. (The group that posted the petition had no control over these ads.)

There was a link for a "Lyme cure," at http://www.lymecured.com. I decided to click and see what that was all about. When I got there, I could see that some woman, "Anna Archer", complete with address & phone no.: 320 Elliott Ave, Seattle, WA, USA, Telephone/Fax: (206) 350 2108, was apparently offering an e-book about an inexpensive cure she learned of from a woman friend at a "girls' night out."

She goes on and on about how great it is, how it helped her,... followed by testimonies from several people from various states; maybe Canada too.

From here, I am so full of curiosity; I've got to google this website and see what others are saying about this. So I type in "warning" and the name of the website. From there, I am led to a couple good sites about scams. One in particular names dozens of scam websites besides this one. I'm curious. So I click on the one for myasthenia gravis (MS.) Wow-- this is like some cookie cutter operation. The picture of the same woman, now with a different name and address, the same page layout, colors and fonts, almost identical testimony (except a different opening line and references to MS symptoms instead of Lyme symptoms...) How phony can one get? I didn't bother looking at the other links. What a joke! And how sad that someone is taking advantage of some very sick and desperate people.

Further, I reverse-looked up the phone no. and then the name at http://whitepages.com. No match for that name or street, or that phone no, though it is appears to be  someone's number. Oh--what a coincidence. That's the same phone number on the myasthenia gravis cure page!

So there you go. The sad thing is that there are some things out there that work, but they get lumped in with the vast number of scams. I still stand by colloidal silver and how it helped me. But I spent very little on commercial products. I made my own and bore responsibility for any/all outcomes be they bad or good. My husband made the inexpensive low-voltage unit for me out of free used parts. There was no one or company ripping me off. I got the .999 silver wire at a good price too. That, the plastic casing and the alligator clips were the only things we paid for. But there are people out there advertising colloidal silver but selling water or something else. Or asking ridiculous prices for their equipment or products.

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
Thessalonians 5:21. 21

So, in  conclusion, Consumer Beware! Always do your homework. Google whatever it is, looking for both sides of the story. When in doubt, don't. Wait it out; research it some more if you can. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Even if it doesn't make you sick(er,) when you buy something unnecessary, you are losing money that could be used better. And you might be losing sales resistance. Sometimes when you wait a few days, weeks or even months, you find out more, or prices come down on something worth getting. So relax, take your time, get the facts. Don't be duped!
