When looking for products effective against ticks, look for products that contain pyrethrums (from the flower, Chrysanthemum, particularly from Kenya) or pyrethrins (synthetic). Products with permethrin or such as Fite Bite (below), Permanone and  Duranon are more effective than those DEET based. (DEET is more effective against mosquitoes than ticks.) Note also that pyrethrins are effective against mosquitoes as well.

Products containing 13.3% permethrin can be diluted and used for various purposes including control of insects in your yard. Read and follow all directions associated with each product for proper use and handling. BJ's Wholesale Club carries such products seasonally.

Also, there are services with liscenced professionals who treat lawns with commercial grade products. For instance, one such company is called "Tick Be Gone." Check your local yellow pages or google for services in your area.
